RECONCILIATION

"I came out of the Confessional more joyful and lighthearted than I had ever felt before."

— St. Thérèse of Lisieux

THE SACRAMENT OF FORGIVENESS

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a place of mercy, healing, and new beginnings. In Confession, we encounter the Lord Jesus, who desires to forgive, restore, and strengthen us—not to shame or condemn us, but to set us free.

All of us fall short at times. We carry burdens, regrets, and wounds that weigh on our hearts. In Reconciliation, we bring those honestly before God and hear the words we long for: “Your sins are forgiven. Go in peace.” Through the ministry of the priest, Christ Himself offers mercy, grace, and the help we need to begin again.

Whether you come regularly or have been away from Confession for many years, you are welcome here. There is no “wrong” way to begin, and the priest is there to guide you every step of the way. This sacrament is not about fear—it is about freedom, reconciliation with God, and renewal of the soul.

If you are unsure how to go to Confession, nervous about returning, or simply curious about the sacrament, we are glad you are here. God’s mercy is always greater than our sin, and He is always ready to receive us. Below you will find step-by-step guidance on how Confession takes place, so you know exactly what to expect when you come.

Preparing for Confession: Examination of Conscience

Before going to Confession, it’s helpful to spend a few moments in prayer and reflect on your life, your relationship with God, and your relationships with others. This reflection is called an Examination of Conscience, and it helps you prepare honestly and peacefully.

You can do this quietly at home or just before Confession.

If you’d like guidance, we recommend ConfessIt, which walks you step by step through a simple Examination of Conscience based on the 10 Commandments and includes a Confession cheat sheet.

What Happens in Confession

Going to Confession can feel intimidating, especially if it’s been a long time—but it doesn’t have to be. Here’s what you can expect:

1. Enter the confessional or reconciliation room
You may sit or kneel, and you can choose to go behind a screen or face the priest—whatever feels most comfortable.

2. Begin the Confession
Make the Sign of the Cross. Then, tell the priest how long it has been since your last Confession. If you’re unsure what to say, don’t worry—the priest will guide you.

3. Confess your sins
Speak honestly about the sins you wish to confess. You don’t need to be perfect or overly detailed—the priest is there to listen with compassion.

4. Receive counsel and a penance
The priest may offer encouragement and give you a penance, usually a prayer or simple action to help you grow in grace.

5. Pray an Act of Contrition
This is a prayer expressing your sorrow for sin. If you don’t remember the words, the priest will help.

6. Receive absolution
The priest prays the words of absolution, and at that moment, your sins are forgiven. You are restored to full communion with God and the Church.

7. Go in peace
After Confession, complete your penance when you are able and take a moment to thank God for His mercy.
