Our Story
A Parish Alive in the Spirit
Christ the King Catholic Church was born out of the Charismatic Renewal movement in Ann Arbor, where a group of Catholics began gathering for Mass and community life under the blessing of Bishop Kenneth Povish in 1981. What began as a small fellowship grew into a vibrant parish, formally established in 1997 as a personal parish of the Diocese of Lansing—meaning our community is defined not by geography, but by a shared spirituality centered on the power and presence of the Holy Spirit.
In 2001, by God’s grace, we dedicated our church home on Earhart Road. Today, Christ the King continues to be a place of worship, formation, and encounter with the living God—where people from all walks of life are drawn into deeper relationship with Christ and the fullness of life in the Spirit.
Our journey has been shaped by the Holy Spirit from the very beginning—here’s a historical look at how Christ the King came to life and grew into the parish we are today.
What does "Charismatic" mean?
Discover Life in the Holy Spirit
To be a charismatic Catholic simply means to live fully open to the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. The word charismatic comes from the Greek charismata, meaning “gifts”—the spiritual gifts described by St. Paul in 1 Corinthians:12, such as wisdom, healing, and prophecy.
The Catholic Charismatic Renewal, which began in the late 1960s, helped countless Catholics rediscover the joy and vitality of life in the Spirit that characterized the early Church. Supported by every pope since its beginning, the Renewal calls believers to a personal relationship with Jesus, a deep love for Scripture, and an openness to the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in everyday life.
Today, the Charismatic Renewal is present in more than 220 countries and has touched the lives of over 120 million Catholics. At Christ the King, this spirituality shapes our worship and our community—we seek to be a people fully alive in the Holy Spirit, joyfully serving Christ and His Church.
