FIRST HOLY COMMUNION
First Holy Communion
More Than Just a Milestone
First Holy Communion is a profound moment in a child’s life of faith, when they receive the Body and Blood of Christ for the first time. In the Eucharist, Jesus gives Himself completely to us—nourishing our souls, strengthening our relationship with Him, and uniting us more deeply to His Church. This sacrament is not simply a milestone, but the beginning of a lifelong relationship with Christ, who calls us to return to the Eucharist again and again for grace, healing, and strength.
The Role of First Confession
An Encounter with Mercy
As part of preparation for First Holy Communion, children are invited to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. First Confession helps children learn to recognize God’s mercy and forgiveness, preparing their hearts to receive Jesus in the Eucharist with greater freedom and love. In Reconciliation, they discover that God’s grace is always stronger than sin, and that they never need to be afraid to return to Him.
Preparation and Catechesis
Preparation for First Confession and First Holy Communion is a journey that unfolds over time through prayer, learning, and participation in the life of the Church. Families may choose from the following catechetical pathways to prepare their child:
Option 1: Parish Religious Education
Children participate in our parish Religious Education classes, where they receive age-appropriate catechesis and preparation for First Confession and First Holy Communion.
Option 2: Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS)
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a two-year program beginning in first grade, rooted in Scripture, liturgy, and hands-on learning. Families interested in this option are encouraged to visit the CGS page for more information.
Option 3: Catholic School or Home-Based Preparation
Children enrolled in Catholic school receive sacramental preparation through their school’s religion curriculum, and come to Christ the King for readiness interviews, rehearsal, and to celebrate the sacraments.
Homeschooling families are also warmly welcome. Many homeschoolers participate in our parish Religious Education program, or parents may choose to prepare their child at home, coming to Christ the King for readiness interviews and practice.
